Merdeka Edition Meal

For this PH, I decided to have a feast of tradition (my family that is) . Did not took leave on Monday, so not worth my money to go back KL on 31st Aug. Already planned to cook for iftar and invite few friends over. So what did I cooked?
 Menu:
Nasi Kerabu ala Utara
Asam Pedas Keladi
Sambal Terung Belanda a.k.a Terung Pipit
Ikan Cencaru Goreng

That is the main ones, the rest are supplied by the guests. I only managed to snap few pics of the ingredient, by the time I finished cooking, it was already maghrib and I was too tired (could not be bothered actually) to snap anymore pictures..hahaha... But the highlight is of course Nasi Kerabu ala Utara. This is not at all the same as Nasi Kerabu that you normally get elsewhere. Only people in Kedah still eat this, though I saw one stall in Cheras sells this, but did not buy for I scared that it would not meet my expectation.

Nasi Kerabu ala Utara
Bahan-bahan:
1 mangkuk besar nasi putih
1 sudu makan halia + serai : ditumbuk halus
1 biji bawang besar : dihiris halus
1 sudu teh lada hitam : ditumbuk halus
1 sudu makan ikan kering (talang) : digoreng dan ditumbuk halus
2 sudu makan kerisik
Segenggam ulam-ulaman : diricik halus (this part I failed miserably..but anyhoo...)
Garam untuk perasa

Cara membuatnya:
Nasi putih dicerai-ceraikan(betul ke ni?) supaya tidak berketul dan dibiarkan sejuk. Dah sejuk,campurkan kesemua bahan-bahan di atas dan gaul rata. Hidangkan bersama asam pedas keladi...
Ulam that was used : daun cekur, daun pegaga, daun gajus...and another 1 more that I did not know what that is..


Asam Pedas Keladi
3 keladi (1 keladi ada ~3-4 batang) : siat dan buang lapisan luar, rendam dalam air
10 biji cii kering
1 sudu teh halba
1 sudu teh jintan manis
1 sudu teh lada hitam
4-5 keping asam
1-2 cm belacan
Segenggam daun kesum
Air secukupnya
Garam untuk perasa

Cara membuatnya
Rebus batang keladi dengan 2 keping asam hingga masak. Tos dan ketepikan. Rendam halba, lada hitam dan jintan manis ke dalam air panas, tumbuk sampai lumat. Kisar cili kering dan masak bersama belacan dan rempah tumbuk tadi. Apabila cili sudah masak, masukkan air, asam keping, daun kesum dan garam. Masak hingga mendidih, kemudian masukkan keladi. Siap untuk dihidang..
 p/s: SMS my mom to get the two recipies..hahaha..baru nak belajar, previously I only prepared the stuffs and she will do all the cooking and what not...

The story:

This was taken during my younger sister's (Kakdik that celebrated her birthday on the 6th March) wedding on 3rd Jan 2009. No, that was not me in the picture. The one wearing kebaya on the left hand side is my younger sister, Ayang. The one in white baju kurung is her best friend, Alin. To Cik Aida, my sis met her best fren when she was schooling in Pahang...hahaha.. adik kite Sekolah Teknik Chenor. Actually Pahang is quite close to my heart as I was born in Temerloh, back in those days a lot of Kedahans move to Pahang, and my late grandma move to Temerloh, Charok Puting in particular. The whole village was opened by Kedahans, so eventhough I was born and raised until 5 years old in Pahang, I could not speak Pahang dialect, because the whole village, the first generation is Kedahans...I still have two aunties in Pahang, one in Bera, and another in Kg Awah.

Ooppss...lari tajuk. hahaha...The receiption was held in Dewan DBKL in Bandar Tun Razak, the whole family theme was green + peach. Alin and Ayang was the one who helped me prepared the high table dish. I think Ayang has already told Alin about the theme colour, and she brought baju kurung that is in the same colour tone. Alin has a boyfriend named Ali (funny rite..hahaha..). She is a tru blu Pahang gurl, but which area, koi kurang periksa ye Cik Aida.

So there you have it, its a coincidence that this story ade sangkut paut ngan Pahang..hahaha..

Hmm this is the tough part. Nobody really reads my blog except for few people (kalo kira tak sampai sebelah tangan..hahaha) So whoever is reading, YOU'RE IT!!! You know who you are....hehehe....

Something about Kedahans...

Kedahan: Ke-da-hans

-nouns

1. a person who is associated with the state of Kedah, located in North of Malaysia . Connection can be either birth,family connection,schooling days or having families residing in Kedah.

You'll probably won't find this definition in any other dictionary in the world because it is one of a kind. See, I was born in Pahang and raised in KL.Spend most of my life in the Klang Valley and now working in PD. But..because both of my parents are from Kedah, the rest of my siblings and I are considered Kedahans as well.

Mind you I can speak fluent Kedah dialect eventhough have never really lived in Kedah.

I will know a Kedahans when I see one,how? well...its subjective actually. We tends to be drawn to one another..or rather we have strong connection to each other. There is this strange patriotism that exist among us. I used to think that my mum is a hardcore Kedahans and gets over excited when she stumble upon another Kedahans. When I first bought my car, the plate no was registered in KL..but my mom went and buy this 'bunga padi' sticker and stuck it onto my car plate. Bunga padi is a proud symbol of Kedah as it signifies the states major production whihc is paddy.

After living in PD and driving long enough I noticed that my mum isn't the only one. The car plate no may be from Penang, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan and many other states is you care, but if the owner is from Kedah, chances are you can spot the sticker quite often.

I have this colleague from different dept that so happens have parents that is from Kedah as well. In one of the conversation, he found out that we share the same pattern and shortly after that I was welcome to the Kedah clan working in PD. It is not an obvious network, its just that people relate to me better when they know a little bit of background. Before it was just "Hi" when we passed by each other, now its like "Bila nak balik Kedah?" kinda question that pops out.

Its interesting actually when people start introducing you as ..."dia ni pon oghang Kedah jgk...".There is this sense of belonging and with me having a house in Kedah now, I felt even more.

So here's a toast of Kedahans..... :)
